“The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands. And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else.”
Acts 17:16-34 tells the story of Paul in Athens. Waiting for his companions, Paul does some sight seeing and notices one of the city's most outstanding features: Athens' profusion of idols. Today, we admire the artistic skill and craftsmanship displayed among surviving statuary in museums, but this story reminds us how these objects were once invested with inordinate value, and why this situation alarmed the Apostle. No mere decoration, to Athenians, these were gods to whom they made sacrifices, objects in which they put their trust, and to whom they pled their cause.
Is there any parallel for us, any sense of liberation from idolatry, when the Lord is revealed as Creator, as Jesus is revealed as Redeemer?NEXT FOUR SUNDAYS

CHURCH BEYOND SUNDAY

Emmaus Road may not be a big church, but when we work together, we can experience moments of "church BIG". This is because God often multiplies our efforts. A couple weeks ago, people enjoyed several such moments. Among them, our first annual Trick'rTreat Oktoberfest was a great success, revealing a neighborhood eager to engage. Viewed together with other moments in that time span, we catch a glimpse of what "church BIG" looks like.
